Capital KIDS offers small group sessions that are carefully crafted to meet the needs of each child. Groups range from 2-5 children paired according to developmental age level (Kinder-2nd grade, 3rd-6th grade) and parent goals.  Groups are dynamic, fun, and energizing for the children.

Self-Regulation and Social Skills: We use the Zones of Regulation approach to self-regulation and emotional control in this group.  Children will develop tools to assist with physical and emotional regulation in a classroom, at home, and when interacting with others. They will also focus on skills to improve making and keeping friends, entering play, appropriate play, showing good sportsmanship, and expressing/understanding feelings during play.

Feeding Therapy: Our therapists use the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach To Feeding in a small group format. This program is designed for picky eaters who have developed anxieties related to eating or trying new foods. The group approach is designed to be fun, play based and stress-free for the children. Through multi-sensory play and careful systematic desensitization, over time children often learn to reduce their fears associated with eating and expand their food repertoire.

Handwriting/Fine-Motor Skills: Children will work on developing the small muscles in their hands as well as the skill of  coordinating their eyes and hands to work together. The objective of this group is to improve handwriting and small motor coordination for school related tasks such as cutting, gluing, beading and folding. Older children can improve upon their skills when learning cursive handwriting.

Sibling Sessions: During therapist-guided sessions, siblings participate in a range of play-oriented intervention exercises designed to promote collaboration and impart self-regulation techniques, facilitating enhanced conflict resolution skills among siblings. Parents and caregivers receive instruction on a variety of strategies to apply within the home setting, aimed at nurturing harmonious and cooperative sibling relationships.

Kindergarten Readiness: Children learn with their peers how to be prepared for Kindergarten. This exciting and dynamic group focuses on the following skills: easing transitions, understanding the expectations of a classroom, handwriting readiness, making new friends, following directions and self-regulation in a classroom setting. The group is guided through a sensory integrative approach incorporating movement, art and music. Lessons are taught in a multi-sensory environment to help children optimize learning. The Handwriting Without Tears curriculum is used to provide a foundation for the children’s pre-writing readiness and handwriting skills, in a fun, tactile and creative way.
